Choose Furniture To Complement A Home

Whether you're moving to a new home or simply want to update your home's interior, choosing furniture that matches the home creates a professional, finished look. With the vast array of furniture styles in the average store, narrowing down the field is a time-consuming and sometimes overwhelming task. Take a step back to evaluate your home's current style to find the perfect pieces for your space.

Instructions

1. Set your furniture budget for the home. If you plan to furnish more than one room, divide the budget between the rooms based on how much furniture you wish to put in each. This helps narrow down the search and stay on track at the furniture store.

2. Determine which furniture you plan to purchase for the home. Note the rooms in which the furniture will go.

3. Take measurements of each room. Make a scale drawing using the measurements. Add in any permanent fixtures in the room.

4. Note the overall style of the home. Common styles include modern, country, rustic or formal. Choose furniture that fits that same style to avoid having it stand out.

5. Make a list of the colors in the rooms that will receive new furniture. Note the wall color, flooring color, any metal finishes and any wood finishes in the room. Choose furniture colors that complement the existing colors. If any of the furniture is wood, make sure it works well with the existing wood colors in the room.

6. Take photos of the rooms that will receive furniture. Bring the photos with you to the furniture store for reference. This helps you visualize how a furniture piece will look in your home and it allows the furniture salesperson to make suggestions.

7. Choose fabrics that work well with your home. Consider other fabric surfaces in the home such as window treatments.

8. Browse the selections at the furniture store. Narrow down the selections that best match your home. Take measurements of those pieces to ensure they will fit into your home.

9. Inspect your final choice to ensure the construction is solid. Check for any movement in the frame, snags in the fabric or splits in the wood. If the furniture has a pattern, make sure the patterns line up at the seams. If the pieces don't live up to your quality standards, go to your second choice.
