A fresh coat of paint can add significant beauty to surfaces within the interior of your home. Unfortunately, paint often leaves unpleasant fumes that stagnate in confined areas. Even after paint dries, it tends to expel odor for days or weeks until it has had an opportunity to fully cure. This is especially true of oil-based paints, which tend to emit solvent odors for long periods of time. Fortunately, you can help eliminate paint odors from your home by using a few effective, natural methods.
Instructions
1. Speed the curing process for water-based latex and oil-based paints by placing the finished item in direct sunlight. Repeat this process for several hours per day for at least one week. Stop here if you were able to eliminate the paint odors.
2. Position a fan so it blows directly onto the painted surface; this will speed the curing process, which will ultimately eliminate paint odor. Continue this for several days until the odor is gone.
3. Mix one teaspoon of vinegar with one gallon of clean tap water.
4. Remove paint odor from oil-based paint by wiping the surface with a rag dampened with the vinegar/water solution. Immediately rinse the surface, using a rag dampened with clean tap water. Dry the surface with cloth towels. Don't use a vinegar solution on surfaces painted with latex paint.
