Updating hardware helps make cabinets look more modern.
Giving your favorite dresser or armoire a new set of hardware, such as handles and hinges, can significantly change the look of the piece. New hardware can also be used to update cabinetry. If you like the design of your current hardware, consider painting it instead of replacing it. With minimal preparation and a can of spray paint, your hardware can be refinished in just one afternoon.
Instructions
1. Remove the hardware from your cabinets or furniture, using a screwdriver.
2. Soak the hardware in a container filled with vinegar or trisodium phosphate. Soak the hardware in water, and then allow it to dry.
3. Sand the hardware with a fine-grain sandpaper if grime or scratches are still present. Rinse the hardware in clean water and allow it to dry.
4. Lay the hardware on newspaper or a dropcloth.
5. Spray on a primer designed for metal. Primer helps the top coat of paint to stick to the metal.
6. Spray a light coat of paint onto the hardware. Make side-to-side motions as you work, always keeping the spray can in constant motion to avoid dripping and uneven coverage. Use thin coats--if one coat is not enough, allow the paint to dry per the manufacturer's instructions and then add a second coat. Allow the paint to dry completely before reattaching the hardware to your cabinetry or furniture.
