Paint
Color can be used to completely redefine a living space. Trim, whether interior or exterior, can be painted to accent and enhance or subdue the outlines of a space. Trim color can also depend upon whether you intend to make a space look larger or less imposing. Choose the color and texture of trim paint based upon your tastes, whether you want it to contrast or blend in with the main color.
Instructions
1. Decide whether you want your trim to stand out or to blend in with the walls. If you want it to contrast or make a bold statement, choose a much lighter or darker shade than that of the wall color. You may want to go with a different color altogether. If you are trying to make a small space look larger, paint the trim the same color as the walls or slightly lighter. A color or tone that contrasts vividly with the walls will make a larger space seem smaller. White or cream trim makes a more traditional statement. If painting trim on an exterior composed of brick or stone, you may opt to match the color of the mortar.
2. Choose the paint texture or sheen. Sheen is the measure of paint gloss or shine as defined by the amount of light that reflects off the finished coat. The sheen can make a dramatic difference in the final outcome of your paint job. On an exterior, sheen can affect how well the paint weathers.
There are four categories of paint sheen. Flat, also called "matte" finish, reflects the least amount of light and usually requires fewer coats. Eggshell or satin finish reflects slightly more light than flat. Semi-gloss finish is highly reflective and is often used in kitchens and bathrooms where it stands up to a great deal of heavy-duty cleaning. High gloss finish is of course, the most reflective of all and is most often used for painting trim, especially when a vivid effect is desired.
3. Create the space you most desire. If you want to try an idea that might seem nontraditional or out of character, don't be afraid to do it. Remember, it's only paint. You can easily repaint with a different color if you don't like the result.
