Design A Home Color

Designing house colors can seem very daunting. With a little ingenuity, you can discover the colors that you like on houses and learn how you can bring those colors to your own home. A house with good colors has strong curb appeal and, subsequently, will be of higher value to potential buyers.

Instructions

1. Drive around your neighborhood and photograph the homes whose exterior colors are the most interesting to you. Try to look at homes that are similar in style and age to your home.

2. Make prints of your photographs. This will help you more easily compare the pros and cons of each paint color scheme.

3. Take good photographs of the front of your house on a sunny day. Try to take the images from an elevated position, such as the bed of a pickup truck. This will make your images more level with the first floor of the house. Make prints.

4. Blow up the print of your house. Make 10 to 15 large photocopies (11-inches by 17-inches).

5. Take the prints of your favorite houses to a quality paint store and try to select paint chips in similar colors. Ask the paint expert for assistance as some colors have pre-selected companion colors. Take paint chips of your selections home with you.

6. Experiment on the photocopies of your house by coloring in your siding and trim using the paint chips for reference and the colored pencils to color the copy. You should be able to narrow down which colors attract you the most.

7. Take your refined selection of colors to the paint store for paint sample cans. If you are not ready to actually try paint on your house, then buy white Kraft paper and tape it to your house and paint on the paper. Paint at least a two-foot by three-foot area with a two-inch paint brush and see how it looks at different times of the day.

8. Adjust your paint colors or tones by working with your paint store to achieve exactly the color, tone and finish you want.
