Get The Arizona Painting And Contracting License

Many people enjoy successful careers as painting contractors. In Arizona, a contractor's license is required in order to engage in contracting activities, including residential and commercial painting. Only a business in good standing can apply for a contractor's license, and the state of Arizona has very specific requirements. By following the requirements set by the state, you can obtain your painting and contracting license.

Instructions

1. Decide which type of business entity you want to form. Speak to an attorney and an accountant to find out if a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company or a corporation is the best entity for your business.

2. Choose the qualifying party for the business. You can only apply for a painting and contracting license if you have an employed person acting as the qualifying party. They must be over the age of 18 with two years of verifiable trade experience.

3. Reserve your business name by submitting a written request with your business address and the company's license classification to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. You cannot legally and officially use the business name until the license application is approved.

4. Obtain a license bond in the form of a surety bond, cash bond or certificate of deposit. Bond amounts vary depending on contractor classification and volume of work per license. In addition you must participate in the Contractor's Recovery Fund by paying either a fee or a $200,000 consumer bond, if applicable.

5. Contact the Arizona Department of Revenue to request a Transaction Privilege Tax License number. You can download the application from the Arizona Department of Revenue website.

6. Get worker's compensation insurance if you have employees. You will have to provide a copy of the certificate of insurance in order for your application to be processed.

7. Register for the State of Arizona Residential and Commercial Contractor exam at the Prometric website. The exam must be taken by the qualifying party and actually includes two exams -- the Business Management exam and the C-34/L-34 (K-34) trade exam for residential and commercial painting and wall covering. A fee of $120 is required at the time of reservation. The exam can be waived if the qualifying party was a qualifying party on a previous Arizona contractor's license for the same classification exam and the license was not suspended or revoked. The exam results are either a pass or a fail.

8. Complete and submit the Arizona Registrar of Contractor's application with the application and consumer recovery fees or consumer bond. Fees depend on contractor type which is either residential, commercial or dual and the classification --- C34 for residential painting and wall covering, L34 for painting and wall covering and K34 for both commercial and residential painting and wall covering. The license application fee for residential painting and wall covering is $320 with a $450 recovery fee or a $200,000 consumer bond. The commercial painting and wall covering license application fee is $645 with no recovery fee or consumer bond. The dual license application fee for both residential and commercial painting and wall covering is $815 with a $450 recovery fee or a $200,000 consumer bond.
