Interactive Kitchen Planning

Interactive kitchen planning tools let you visualize a space's potential.

The idea of travelling from one kitchen showroom to the next might leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. The process of choosing a layout and finding the right cabinets and appliances to fill your kitchen space can be daunting. Interactive kitchen design tools solve this dilemma by allowing you to design your new kitchen from the comfort of your own home. From your computer, you can design your kitchen from start to finish. You will not only avoid traipsing all over town, you won't even have to get out of your pajamas.

Instructions

1. Find an online planning tool. Some may require that you download the application to your computer. As an example, Ikea has software that contains all of their products. Other retailers provide similar online tools. There are a number of sites online not affiliated with a retailer that provide free software.

2. Choose a basic room shape from the online tool. Measure all of the walls of your kitchen and type these measurements into the interactive design tool. You should see a basic layout of your kitchen.

3. Add windows and doors to the drawing. Measure the height and width of the existing windows and doors. If you plan to add or remove windows and doors, alter the plan accordingly. Start at one end of the wall and measure to the start of the window or door. Insert the opening in the proper location on your drawing.

4. Insert plumbing fixtures and power outlets into your drawing. Measure the distance from one end of the wall to the fixture. Insert the fixture in the exact location on the drawing.

5. Select cabinets for the kitchen. Determine the height and depth of the cabinets as well as their placement in the kitchen. The interactive planning tool will have cabinet choices for you to pick from. Finalize the cabinet layout.

6. Choose appliances and insert them into your interactive drawing. Choose appliances from a drop-down menu on the planning tool.

7. Play with colors and designs for your new kitchen. Add decorative elements like scrollwork. Alter the floor color and the cabinet color. Finalize your design. Save and print the drawing.
