Gray is the most versatile color next to white. Because it has almost no hue characteristics, it can be a canvas for almost any other color. Pure gray is neither warm nor cool, but most gray paint leans one way or the other. The reason is the undertones in the materials used to color the paint. Gray can be muted and classic. It can also have a cool, contemporary aspect. Mix and match values of gray and use it as a base for the other components of your decor.
Instructions
1. Stay with either all cool or all warm grays for an easy consistency.
2. Mix a light gray on the walls with darker-valued gray on trim, box beams, doors and baseboards. This provides powerful contrast while keeping the room light.
3. Use a dark gray wall color as a cool yet earthy base for a more colorful decor palette. The dark gray wall will set off luminous reds, oranges or other bright colors of furniture or accessories.
4. Add a little metallic silver paint to a gray to give gray paint a subtle sheen.
5. Employ contrasting shades of gray throughout the room for a classic, chic look. Abstaining from color enhances the cool feel.
6. Use a white ceiling mixed with gray walls for maximum luminosity. The bright ceiling will reflect light. This preserves light in the room and counteracts darkening effects of gray.
