The earthy color on this home looks just right with the brown roof.
Painting a house with a brown roof is no different than painting a house with any other color roof. No matter what color your roof is, you should take into consideration that color in order to make the best color choices for your house. Once you've picked the color for the house, you can proceed with the rest of the painting as you would for any house.
Instructions
1. Pick the color for your home and trim. The type of colors that will look good with your brown roof depend on the shade of the roof. A warm brown will often look best with warm colors. Warm colors, which are found on one side of the color wheel, include red, orange and yellow. A brown roof will also look good with other browns. A cool brown, which is a brown with gray in it, will look best with earth-tone colors like cool green and cool browns. For the trim, you can pick a different shade of whatever color you've chosen for your home, or a neutral like tan, khaki or cream.
2. Choose paint samples of your favorite paint choices and paint them on a scrap board. Wait for the paint to dry before making your decision. Paint samples for the trim as well and hold the trim samples up to the color you've chosen for your home.
3. Prep the house for painting by cleaning the house with a power washer. Then sand and scrape off excess paint.
4. Paint the house with exterior primer. Primer will help the paint adhere to the surface of your wood siding.
5. Paint the edges of your house -- the areas closest to the trim, ground and the roof. Paint any areas that you will need to cover with a paintbrush, including nooks and tight places like the underside of each siding board. This is known as "cutting in."
6. Paint the siding with a roller.
7. Paint the trim. Use an angled sash brush.
