French country décor channels the rustic homes of the French countryside, most notably the Provence region in southeastern France. There are many color combinations which work well in a French country home. You may choose to use one of these palettes, or incorporate several in different rooms to work French country décor throughout the house. Red, white and blue are often considered the go-to colors for French décor, as these are the colors of the French flag. Soft blues and greens blend well to create a clean, cool look reminiscent of the Mediterranean seaside. Yellow is also a very important color in French country home décor. Combined with a warm red, you have a classic French country color combination. Red, Blue and White
1. To incorporate red, white and blue in a French country theme, avoid using too many bright vivid blues and reds and instead opt for a more muted look. Choose either red or blue to be your brighter accent color and use softer shades of the other color.
2. If you prefer vivid blues, select reds that lean toward the blue end of the color spectrum. Include pink, salmon, and other softer shades. If you are using a deep red or mahogany color, use a pale chalky blue that is almost grayish. Select a white that has a grayish or slightly blue tint to it.
3. Accentuate this color scheme with terra cotta flooring or surfaces. Dark wood or wrought iron furniture compliment the look well. Balance the hard lines and surfaces of these types of furniture with abundant throw pillows in a variety of materials and hues.
Blue and Green
4. To decorate a room with blues and greens, mix and match varying hues. Pair a soft, pale blue with a dark green, or a gentle sea foam green with a strong navy blue.
5. Accentuate this theme with white and ivory in the form of curtains, fabrics and porcelain accessories.
6. To warm up the cool blues and greens, incorporate shades of yellow or orange. Think of sand, seashells and warm sunlight. Hardwood floors with an orange tint work well with this color scheme.
Red and Yellow
7. Incorporate many varying shades of both yellow and red. Deep gold, bright sunflower yellow and pale buttery hues all have a place in this palette. The reds can range from a deep crimson to a more subdued shade.
8. Use red or gold to create a stucco finish on the walls. Both colors work extremely well for this and will instantly give the room a French country feel.
9. Use patterns that incorporate both colors. Patterned fabrics, such as calico, are classic for French country décor. Select a design that uses both red and yellow to tie these colors together.
10. Accentuate this theme with copper. Copper cookware and plates add texture to a French country home, as well as a touch of authenticity to the style. This works best in a kitchen or dining room.
