Decorative Painting Traditions

Household items like this plate often served as the palette for decorative artists.

Decorative painting traditions are varied. They include a number of different painting traditions, which include fine art painting techniques as well as those that are considered to be more decorative and craft-based. However, all of these decorative painting traditions share similar roots.

History

Many styles of decorative painting started out as folk art. Decorative painting isn't isolated to just one culture, but spans many. It was created by common folk who wanted to decorate their homes. It wasn't created by professional artists, but rather homeowners looking to beautify their homes.

Identification

The types of decorative painting techniques are many and cover a broad range of materials. For example, there are decorative wall murals, trompe l'oeil, tole painting and texturing techniques using paint. Some of them belong on the wall, but some are used to decorate furniture or create painted crafts (see Resources.)

Considerations

Each type of decorative painting tradition requires quite a bit of preparation in order to execute. Despite the non-professional roots of decorative painting, some styles like trompe l'oeil---French for "fool the eye"---require that the painter train in the traditions of 3-D painting techniques.
