paint a tree house
A tree house is a magical hide out, a private space for dreaming, reading or hatching plans with a best friend. Whether the tree house you plan to decorate is a secret club or the setting for afternoon tea parties, careful preparation plus creative imagination will result in a successful project. It isn't hard to paint a tree house and, if you take it step-by-step, it doesn't have to be that messy or take very long. Just pick a dry day for your paint party and, for best results, let the occupants help select the colors and apply the finishing touches.
Instructions
Painting a tree house
1. Gather all the supplies you will need and place them at the base of the tree for easy access. If you need a ladder to get to the tree house, be sure it is leaning securely against the trunk of the tree or is otherwise safely fastened.
2. Scrape all old paint off wood or, if using new wood, be sure to sand any rough spots. Apply a primer coat to new wood and let it dry.
3. Paint the inside ceiling and the exterior roof. Don't worry too much about drips because you will be painting over them next. Allow the paint to dry and then stick painter's tape along the edge of the ceiling where the ceiling and wall meet inside.
4. Paint the main wall colors, inside and out. When the interior paint has dried, remove the painter's tape to reveal a clean edge at the juncture of ceiling and wall.
5. Stick painter's tape on walls at the juncture of wall and floor. Paint the floor, starting at the corner farthest from the door or exit and working backwards until the entire floor is painted and you are outside the tree house. When the floor is dry, remove the painter's tape.
6. Have fun with the trim---paint contrasting colors around window openings to resemble ledges, frames or shutters. You can use small bottles or jars of hobby paint for this or a quart of color-mixed paint to cover large areas. Paint the door, if the tree house has one.
7. When the paint is dry, use permanent markers or hobby paints to draw Keep Out! signs, graffiti, flower borders, a mailbox, an interior "carpet" or exterior "door mat" or other decorations to personalize the tree house. A top coat of clear acrylic over these decorations will protect the artwork from the elements.
