Vehicles with damage or scratches are repaired by auto body shops, which replace broken parts and repaint vehicles. While this requires some training and education, the training can be completed in one to two years. Graduates of a training program have the opportunity to seek employment through an established repair business or start their own home auto body shop.
Instructions
1. Check city ordinances. Determine if it is legal to operate a commercial business from your residence. Some places prohibit this through zoning regulations. Ask about the need for a business license and obtain one if necessary.
2. Build or convert a shop. Make your garage into your home auto body shop or renovate another building on your property. Construct a new building if you can't use the garage or another building.
3. Acquire equipment. Purchase tools needed to paint and repair vehicles. Buy an auto creeper to use when you need to slide under vehicles to replace parts. Get toolboxes or locked cabinets to store tools and prevent them from being stolen if someone breaks into your home auto body shop.
4. Obtain references. Complete auto body work on the vehicles of family members and friends for free in return for them serving as references for prospective clients.
5. Promote your shop. Encourage family and friends to refer clients to your home auto body shop. Place an ad in the local newspaper or yellow pages. Post a flyer in approved public places such as grocery stores, churches and schools. Provide discounts for customers who refer other clients to you.
