White is a common color for houses.
Color can have a drastic effect not only on the heating bill of a home but also on the mind of its residents and guests. The color of a home can make it warm and inviting or cold and neutral, bright and cheery or dark and imposing. Because of this, homes are available in several colors, the best of which not only invite and soothe the homeowner, but convey status as well.
Whites
The most popular choice of colors for the home is white, and several shades are available for homes today. Arctic white is bright with a tinge of blue while eggshell white has a slightly warmer appearance. Bright white is the purest form of exterior color and shines out as the most highly visible. White is a perennial favorite for the homeowner not only because of its compatibility with other colors, but also because it reflects more light than all other exterior colors. White shows dirt very easily and requires constant cleaning and maintenance.
Creams
For those looking for a light color with less intensity than white, creams and tans are also a popular color choice. These colors come in shades from eloquent ivory to antique beige. These colors are light enough to reflect the heat from the sun, lowering the ambient temperature inside a house, but dark enough to hide mild dust and dirt. Shades of cream exterior are also easier to look at in the full sunlight.
Blues
Another favorite shade among homeowners is blue. This color is easily compatible with the green of the hedge and works well with white, gray and even some red trim colors. Shades of light blue include dusty miller, icy waterfall and antique silver, while darker shades include blue-gray slate, mountain slate blue and stormy night. These colors do not reflect or absorb a significant amount of sunlight.
Cool Neutrals
A favorite of housing developments because of their compatibility are the cool neutral family of colors. These colors include grays such as ethereal mood, blues such as outer space and greens such as mint. Although these colors neither absorb nor reflect a great deal of light or heat, they are easy to match with either dark or light trim and contribute to a contemporary look.
Warm Neutrals
Like cool neutrals, warm neutrals are interchangeably compatible and help complete a modern style look to a home exterior. While cool neutrals are close to the gray color family, warm neutrals are closer to brown with shades such as tea chest, French roast and canvas tan.
