Make African Adornments

When it comes to African decor, there are many variations.

African terrain, wildlife and traditions influence decorating styles and even create themes for decorators; with inspiration from about a hundred tribes spread over 54 countries. Understanding the different tribes and cultural influences, helps you choose and combine appropriate decorations.

Instructions

1. Find a fabric with leopard, cheetah, zebra or giraffe print and use it for floor rugs, drapes, pillow covers, duvets, curtains, lampshades and shelf covers. The animal print patterns symbolize the vast African wild.

2. Decorate a room or a table with African vases and candleholders made of soapstone, shells and clay. Place flowers with green accents to symbolize the African grassland, violet and lilac flowers for a warm feel and the sunflower to symbolize the sun, a symbol of life for the African people. Arrange the vases in groups of three to create a focal point with your decorations.

3. Paint your frames in African colors such as black and white, flaming red, bright oranges, yellow, earth brown and green or animal prints to create an African feel. Alternatively, stick shells, small sized stones from the African shores or African beads on the frames with an adhesive. Place family pictures or paintings of your choice in the frames.

4. Frame African traditional masks, indigenous tools, woven fabrics, image figures such as women with pots, which you hang up to complement your African decor.

5. Select furniture in dark woods and a rustic finish. Choose furniture made from bamboo and mahogany and paint it in dark colors with a mosaic finish on tabletops. Find furniture meant for outdoor purpose and that is irregular and asymmetrical with intricate details and natural lines.

6. Draw animal murals on walls for decorations. Frame paintings of grasslands and/or African terrains to hang as wall hangings.
