Moroccan Home Designing

The North African country of Morocco lends a rich history of color and culture to easy, trendy decorating styles. While the country itself is a mix of various heritages culminating into what is known today, Moroccan interior design continues that mix, with various elements taken from Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Whether decorating a single room with a few pieces, or an entire house, the earthy, warm look can make any home feel like an exotic haven.

Instructions

1. Bring the natural beauty of Morocco into your home with a careful selection of colors. Moroccan colors are warm, but vibrant -- reminiscent of stained glass panes. Silver, yellow and gold signify the desert surrounding Morocco, whereas the jewel colors of green and blue are reminiscent of the ocean, with purple and deep red for accent. The rich color scheme can be displayed in paint hues, throw pillows, bedding, wall tapestries, rugs or even window coverings.

2. Use traditional Moroccan materials, such as wool, linen, velvet or silk brocade. Incorporating embroidery or beading adds old-world flair. Lighter materials are used for bedding and pillows, and heavier materials -- such as canvas or wools -- can be used to upholster furniture or cover floors. Throws in big-cat designs, such as tiger skin, can be casually tossed over an ottoman or chair for jungle mystique.

3. Purchase a piece of furniture with Moroccan flair -- goat, cow or camel leather, or Thuja tree wood -- which gives the piece a distinct look and color. Furniture should be cozy, overstuffed, warm and inviting. If using a fabric upholstery, use jewel tones; one piece can be used with neutral colors, rather than changing the entire room.

4. Add a piece with Moroccan design. This could be a piece of colorful pottery that stands out -- such as a vase or jar in green, white, black or yellow, with a pattern in a contrasting color -- or a larger piece, such as a lighting fixture, that draws attention to one spot in the room.

5. Place exotic plants around the room -- or the entire house, based upon your decorating scheme -- to bring the Moroccan outdoors inside. Try potted lemon, orange or mango trees, rosebushes, palms, cacti or imported trees, such as litchi, umbrella pines or Thuja.
