You must solidify acrylic paint before disposing of it.
For home improvement workers, artists, model makers and others, paint is a ubiquitous part of everyday life. Even most homeowners need to occasionally deal with paint.There are two major types of paint: oil-based paint and water-based paint. Acrylic paint is water-based, so some people may think it is less dangerous than the highly toxic oil-based variety. However, the chemicals in any type of paint can be hazardous to the environment, contaminating groundwater if disposed of improperly. Solidify the paint before disposing of it to prevent this contamination.
Instructions
1. Move the paint to a well-ventilated area, such as an open garage or outdoor work space, or ventilate your work space by opening windows and doors or installing fans. This will help you to avoid breathing in paint fumes. Wear protective gloves when working with potentially hazardous chemicals such as paint.
2. Pour a layer of non-flammable absorbent material into the bottom of a plastic bucket, so that the bottom of the bucket is completely covered. These materials, such as kitty litter, will absorb the paint and solidify it.
3. Pour the acrylic paint into the bucket on top of the absorbent material. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a wooden stirring stick.
4. Alternate adding absorbent material and paint, followed by thorough stirring, until all of the paint has solidified into clumps.
5. Place the bucket, paint cans, stirring stick and all other paint-related products into a sturdy garbage bag and tie or seal it tightly to prevent leaking. Dispose of the bag in garbage pick-up that you know will go to a landfill.
