Painting high ceilings requires knowledge of the correct procedures, along with the proper equipment.
The cathedral ceilings of many modern homes create an impressive sense of space, but they can also make it difficult for you to do appropriate maintenance, such as painting. Painting ceilings is often tricky under the best circumstances, but high ceilings add to the challenge. Fortunately, this problem is not insurmountable. With the right equipment and a knowledge of proper painting techniques, you can tackle the job of painting your high ceilings with confidence.
Instructions
By Yourself
1. Clear the work area of any furniture or obstacles. Obtain an extension ladder. Use the ladder to cut in, which means to apply a layer of paint on the perimeter of the ceiling where it joins the wall. Use a flat paint to avoid creating lap marks. Apply the paint with a brush. Apply a 2-inch-wide layer of paint to the entire perimeter.
2. Obtain an extension pole with a 9-inch roller attached. Apply paint with the roller. After you roll on the paint, make sure the next application overlaps the previous one.
3. Take your time, and roll out the paint smoothly. Avoid swinging the extension pole excessively.
With an Assistant
4. Use a second person as an assistant if someone is available.
5. Get your assistant to cut in while you follow behind him with the extension pole. This method will let you use other types of paint besides flat paint and still avoid lap marks.
6. Avoid letting your assistant get too far in front of you. Paint the area your assistant has cut in before the paint dries. When your assistant has finished cutting in, paint the rest of the ceiling, using the extension pole.
