Plain crystal glasses can look more elegant than silver-edged ones.
Metallic edges on fancy glasses may seem like a touch of class to some, but they also pose some problems. In addition to making the glassware less versatile when coordinating with flatware and china, some users may have a metal sensitivity. Or the metal may wear away from the glass unevenly, giving the glassware a worn look. But it is a relatively simple process to remove silver-colored rims from glasses.
Instructions
1. Soak a cotton ball with nail polish remover and rub it on the rim of the glasses; some metallic edges on wine glasses are made from a paint or powder and binder solution that you can dissolve this way. If so, you'll see the metal paint start to rub away from the glass or start to color the cotton ball. Continue wiping with fresh cotton balls until you've removed all traces of the metal. If not, continue on to the next step.
2. Rub the edges of the glasses with fine sandpaper. For best results, tear a small piece of sandpaper and wrap it around your fingertip so that you can control the angle of the sandpaper and rub only the metal edge, not the glass beneath it. Change to a new piece of sandpaper every few minutes and wipe away the metal dust with a damp cloth. Continue until all the metal is removed, leaving frosted glass rims in their place. (If you like the look of this, you're finished, but continue to the next step to restore the glass's clarity.)
3. Wash and polish the glass using white vinegar. Dry with a soft, dry cloth and a circular rubbing motion to remove all traces of fingerprints or water spots.
4. Pour some clear lacquer into the disposable plastic lid. Use enough to make it deep enough that you can submerge the rim of the glass and cover the rim.
5. Upturn each glass and dip the rim in the laqcuer to coat it. Lift the glass out of the laqcuer and continue holding it upside-down until the laqcuer is no longer dripping off. Turn the glass right side-up; if any laqcuer drips down the edges, carefully wipe it away. Repeat with all your glasses. Let dry.
