Mixing your own paints helps you achieve the exact color you want.
Redecorating your home requires time and patience, especially for beginner designers. A key ingredient in achieving the perfect aesthetic is finding the perfect color of paint. It can be disheartening to discover the color you have in mind is not available off-the-shelf. It might take a little practice at first, but mixing and tinting your paints by hand is a worthwhile challenge even novice painters can master.
Instructions
Planning
1. Pick up a number of different colored swatches from your local hardware store to find the exact color you are looking for.
2. Ask your hardware store if you can test tinting the color before you buy to ensure you have the right base. Some stores will let you do this. If so, test tinting small amounts of base paints in search of the correct coloring.
3. Purchase the base color closest to the shade you are looking for and a tinting paint. You will need white paint if you are trying to lighten the base or a darker tint to darken it. Remember that darker colored paint is easier to tint lighter than lighter paints are to darken.
Mixing Paint
4. Remove the lids from the paint cans and thoroughly stir both with a stirring stick.
5. Pour a small amount of base color paint into an empty can.
6. Add several drops of tinting paint to the base paint and stir.
7. Check the stirring stick to see if the colored paint matches the color on your swatch.
8. Continue adding tint paints into the can until you achieve the correct shade. This will help you identify how much tint to apply to your base without running the risk of ruining the paint.
9. Add the tint paint to the full can of base paint and stir until you reach the correct coloring.
