The Chinese New Year is celebrated in many parts of the world.
Celebrated for thousands of years, the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the oldest Chinese festival, and is a chance to celebrate the new season of spring. The celebration lasts for two weeks, with many different celebratory acts taking place, including decorating the house and enjoying large family meals. Eggs are a traditional symbol of spring, and they can be decorated as a way to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Colored Eggs
Red symbolizes good luck and joy.
The color red symbolizes happiness, luck and virtue in Chinese culture, and many people dress in red, and decorate their house red to celebrate Chinese New Year. You can make some baskets of red dyed eggs for your house. Fill a cup of water half full, and add a few drops of red food coloring with a teaspoon of white vinegar. You can then dip the eggs into the cup and leave them for a few minutes until they become bright red. You can also dye the eggs other colors. The five colors traditionally used in Chinese culture are red, black, white, yellow, and green-blue. Each color has its own meaning, for example yellow represents neutrality, and green-blue symbolizes vitality.
Chinese Art Eggs
You can paint the eggs one of the five traditional colors, and decorate them with Chinese artwork. Use stickers, or cut Chinese artwork pictures and photos from magazines, such as travel agency magazines, or print some Chinese clip art from free websites. The pictures or stickers can then be added to the colored eggs and displayed around your house, or given out as gifts, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Carved Painted Eggs.
You can make an attractive carved painted egg for the Chinese New Year celebrations. First dye the egg one of the five traditional Chinese colors, and then make two holes either side of the egg using a sewing needle. Blow the egg yolk and white out of the egg. Paint your design on the egg, and carve it out using a burin and shovel knife. If you place the finished egg behind a tea light, the carved features are illuminated like a jack-o-lantern.
Painting Techniques
Children can be part of the New Year preparations.
Painting eggs is a respected and collectible art form. Painting your own designs to celebrate the Chinese New Year can be done using watercolor or acrylic paint. Using watercolor on egg shell makes the colors bright and shiny, whereas acrylic paint is versatile paint, making it possible to paint different styles on the egg. Both watercolor and acrylic are non-toxic, and so are safe for children to use.
