Clean wrought iron fences before painting them.
Wrought iron is a malleable metal that manufacturers use to make intricate details on fences. Over time, the wrought iron develops stains, and the paint may begin to peel off. Repaint these fences to restore the pristine look they had when you installed them. It is always better to paint a fence during the spring or fall, but if you must paint the fence in the winter, choose a day when no rain or other precipitation is forecast.
Instructions
1. Paint in the morning when the heat of the sun has warmed up the ironwork so that it is above 35 degrees Fahrenheit. This will help the paint go on the fence more smoothly.
2. Brush the entire surface of the wrought-iron fence with a wire-bristled brush. Remove as much of the rust as possible. Brush over the entire surface until you've removed all of the large pieces of rust.
3. Spray a rust remover over the wrought-iron fence, and let it sit for at least 10 minutes or until the rust remover has settled in.
4. Scrub the wrought-iron fence with a stiff nylon-bristled scrubbing brush. Work until the entire fence is completely clean.
5. Rinse the fence with clear hot water, using a sponge. Don't douse the fence with cold water, because this can cause it to freeze on the fence. Let the fence dry completely.
6. Dip a paintbrush into metal primer, and brush it over the entire surface of the fence. Spread a thin and even layer of primer, and let it dry completely.
7. Apply a second coat of metal primer to completely seal the fence. This will help prevent rust from seeping through. Let the primer dry completely.
8. Dip a paintbrush into alkyd paint, and brush it over the fence from the top to the bottom. Apply a thin layer of paint, as it will chip less frequently than a thicker coat. Let the fence dry completely.
