Painting your own car can be a rewarding experience if you have the right equipment and if you don't, disaster is imminent. Precision and money is all it takes to paint your car with the right equipment. You don't have to spend a fortune, but you will have to have a few good quality tools. A space with ventilation is just as important as good tools.
Instructions
1. Find a good quality wax and grease remover and use it to wipe off any debris and dirt that isn't water soluble. Re-wash with warm soapy water and towel dry.
2. Rub high quality sandpaper over the surface of the car to scuff it up a bit and to smooth out the surface.
3. Run a new wire from the chassis to the ground to discharge all the static. Take off any jewelry and remove the static from your body.
4. Touch the surface of the car to make sure it is dry all over before you begin to tape windows and mirrors. Check for lint-use only the best lint free towels you can find.
5. Tear strips of a good quality paint tape and run them along the edge of mirrors and windows. Use newspaper and tape to make sure the spray paint doesn't get on the mirrors and windows.
6. Select a high-grade primer and use a new name-brand spray gun to spread the primer on the surface of the car evenly. Scrub the dry primer with a high quality sand paper to make the entire surface even.
7. Purchase only the best urethane based colored paint-the first coat is your base coating. Let the paint dry for 15 minutes before another coat is applied. Most cars have 3 coats of paint.
8. Get 3 even coats of clear finish on the car surface and let the first two dry 15 minutes between coats and 90 minutes for the final coat.
