Fresh paint Door Hinges

Painting a door hinge is easier than it seems.

Painting hinges might seem intimidating. After all, how do you let the paint dry without freezing up the hinges forever? As with many home improvement projects, the secret is simple but hardly intuitive. Set aside a full afternoon for this project, since precision is important, and you'll spend hours waiting for the paint to dry.

Instructions

1. Lay out your drop cloth in a well-ventilated area.

2. Push out the hinge pins using your hammer and screwdriver. Move the door and pins to the center of your drop cloth.

3. Remove the hinges still attached to your wall, again using your screwdriver. Bring them to your drop cloth.

4. Confirm that the hinges and pins are all clean and free of rust. If not, scrub them clean and dry thoroughly before continuing.

5. Run masking tape on the tops and bottoms of the hinge prongs and along the shafts of the hinge pins. Paint on these areas may interfere with the hinges' operation.

6. Apply a coat of primer to all exposed areas of your hinges and hinge pins. Use a primer formulated to adhere to the metal your hinges are made from. Allow the primer to dry.

7. Apply a coat of paint over the primer. Allow to dry, and then add a second coat if necessary.

8. Remove all tape. Reinstall the hinges and door.
