Exterior cement paint can prevent water damage and mold growth.
Painting exterior cement can benefit more than just the appearance of a building. A new coat of exterior-grade cement paint can also keep water from infiltrating the cement bricks and prevent mold growth. While it may seem counter-effective to mist finished coats of paint with water, bear in mind that a coat of cement paint---after it's dried---actually needs moisture to bond with its surface properly.
Instructions
1. Clean dirt, grime, mold or moss off of the cement surface with aggressive brushing. Scrape off old whitewash. Use a water hose with a spray nozzle to rinse the surface.
2. Mix two parts cement paint with one part of water, slowly adding the cement paint to the water as you stir. Add one more part water to the mixture to make it more fluid, once the cement paint has been fully added. Stir the solution thoroughly again.
3. Apply the first coat of cement paint within one hour of mixing it, using paint brushes or a handheld sprayer. Make sure the paint application is uniform. When the first coat has dried, lightly spray the painted surface with water.
4. Apply second coat of cement paint no less than 24 hours after the first coat and after the water sprayed on the first coat has dried.
5. Spray the dried second coat of paint lightly with water. This ensures a proper curing, by supplying the moisture cement paint needs in order to bond with cement and harden.
