Fresh paint Picture Paneling

Picture paneling, or paneling that looks like it consists of several picture frames, can sometimes look outdated. However, a few coats of paint will transform the outdated paneling to an updated architectural element. Homeowners who have picture paneling can paint their paneling with just a little bit of work. Knowing the proper procedure is an important part of the process.

Instructions

1. Place a plastic dropcloth onto the floor. Tape any areas that should not be painted with painter's tape.

2. Fix dents, large scratches or gouges, and nail holes in the paneling, using wood putty and a putty knife. Allow the putty to dry completely.

3. Sand the picture paneling with fine-grit sandpaper. Get into the grooves of the "picture frames." The paneling must be smooth. It is also important that the finish on the paneling be roughed up, and not glossy. Use a hand sander for large amounts of paneling.

4. Apply a latex painting primer. Use a paint roller to roll the large expanses of wood on the picture paneling, and a paintbrush to get into the grooves. Let the painting primer dry.

5. Paint two to three coats of latex paint onto the picture paneling. If you are painting over very dark paneling, you may need three coats, but in most cases two coats of paint will work. Let each of the coats dry before applying another coat of paint.
