Hanging paintings requires taking several measurements.
According to Katharine Kaye McMillan and Patricia Hart McMillan, authors of "Home Decorating for Dummies," one common mistake when decorating your home is hanging a painting at the incorrect height. When hanging a painting in your home, you should be able to view the art comfortably as you walk into the room. Finding the height that allows for this requires you to take a few prerequisite measurements before hanging the artwork on your wall.
Instructions
1. Measure the distance from the ground to your eyes. You should hold your head so your chin is parallel with the floor, looking straight ahead. This is your eye level.
2. Use a pencil to mark your determined eye level lightly on the wall. This point is where you will position the center of the painting.
3. Measure the painting to find the exact center, and then measure from the center of the painting to the hook that allows it to hang. If the painting hangs by wire, pull the wire up to mimic how it would hang on the wall and measure the distance from the center to the wire.
4. Measure from the mark on your wall up, using the length from the center of the painting to the hook. This is where you will set the picture nail to hang your painting.
5. Hang the painting on the nail and stand back -- you should be able to view the entire piece without having to look up or down. Level the painting so it hangs evenly and repeat the measurement process with any other paintings you would like to hang.
