Decorate A Flowerpot By Having An African Theme

Patterns that display animals native to Africa are appropriate choices for an African-themed flowerpot.

There's absolutely no reason why your flowerpots should look like every other flower container in the store. Instead, your flowerpots should be as unique and distinct as you are and as bright and as colorful as the flowers they display. One way to decorate them is to endow them with a cultural pattern or design that reflects your heritage or a culture you're interested in. For example, an African theme will give the flowerpots striking shapes and colors.

Instructions

1. Apply a thin coat of terra cotta sealer to the inside of the flowerflowepot. This will prevent moisture absorbed into the terra cotta from the soil and watering schedule from causing the exterior layer of paint to flake or peel. Allow it to dry.

2. Select a stencil design that has a strong African theme. It's smart to choose a design that's not too busy so it doesn't take attention away from your flowers. Appropriate designs include Ndabele border stencils, images of bushmen or animals native to Africa, and paw prints.

3. Experiment with where the stencil looks best. Some stencils might look better on the rim while others might look better featured on the body of the flowerpot. Tape the stencil to the exterior of the pot in your desired area with painter's tape.

4. Spray the design onto the pot in bright colors of latex spray paint, such as yellow, red, oranges, indigo and other shades. Limit the area of the spray only to the area exposed by the stencil.

5. Remove the stencil and tape gently as the paint is drying. Be careful when removing the stencil to avoid smudging the paint.

6. Allow the pot to dry thoroughly and then spray it with an even coat of sealer to protect the paint, particularly if the pot will be going outside.
