Painting your home can give it a new look.
A quick, fairly cheap way to give your home a fresh look is to paint it. When you're choosing a color scheme, it's a good idea to consider the style and decor of your home. Earth tones are often best for a country home. Bold colors are striking in a contemporary home. After you've picked your colors, save yourself some money by doing the painting yourself.
Instructions
1. Go to a home-improvement or hardware store and pick the colors you want for the rooms you plan to paint.
2. Test the paint in the real-life setting of your home. A color, when painted on a wall, can look very different from the color you saw at the home-improvement or hardware store. Purchase a can of each color that you are considering, and then paint a poster board with each color. Hang the sheets of poster board on the walls for a few days. Move them to different spots in the room every day to see how they look at different times. Also, place the poster boards in locations where you can view them from a different room. This can help you decide how the colors work as you move from room to room. Some people like a smooth transition, while others prefer a bold color change to differentiate each room.
3. Move all of the furniture out of the room. Cover the floor and any immovable objects, such as a heavy appliance or a radiator, with a drop cloth to protect them from paint splatters. Take down any curtains or blinds and store them in a safe location.
4. Remove vent covers and plates from electrical outlets and light switches. Take down any light fixtures or ceiling fans.
5. Wash the walls with a light bleach solution to remove dirt, grease and grime from the walls.
6. Run painter's tape along the edges of the baseboard, molding, door and window trim and borders where a different color will be used.
7. Patch any cracks or holes in the wall with putty and sand it down. Seal any gaps between the wall and molding with caulk.
8. Apply primer to any areas that you patched or the entire room if the paint requires it.
9. Paint the room. Use brushes in corners and around trim and rollers or a paint sprayer for the main parts of the walls. Follow the instructions on the can regarding apply the paint. Add a second coat if necessary, and allow the paint to dry.
10. Remove the painter's tape from the borders and trim. Place new painter's tape on the walls around the borders and trim.
11. Paint the borders and trim around the doors and windows. Apply a second coat if necessary, and allow the paint to dry.
