Fresh paint Different Finishes

Choose the right paint finish for each room of your house.

Painting the walls of your home is a relatively straightforward, affordable way to transform the look of your interior. Before you purchase your paint, you need to decide not only on the color of the paint but also the type of finish you want. The finish you choose depends on the particular room you are painting and the current condition of the walls. You may find that you use many different paint finishes throughout your home.

Instructions

1. Apply matte paint if you want a flat, no-shine finish. This is ideal if you have bumpy walls or need to cover up cracks or other drywall and plaster flaws. Matte paint will wash off if you try to wipe it clean, so it is not recommended for high traffic or children's rooms.

2. Decorate with flat enamel paint for a matte finish with a higher level of resistance that will cope with occasional cleaning. Flat enamel paint is a good choice for bathrooms.

3. Use eggshell paint for a finish that is midway between a flat and a glossy finish. Eggshell paint has some reflective properties and will stand up to occasional cleaning but is less durable than a satin or glossy finish.

4. Apply satin paint for an easy-to-clean finish with a rich texture and slightly glossy effect. Satin walls can be cleaned regularly, making them perfect for children's rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

5. Decorate with glossy or demi-glossy paint for a high-gloss finish that is shiny and durable. Most people use this paint finish on cabinets, wood work and accents rather than on walls.
