Fresh paint Slate Siding

If you own a home with slate shingles and are looking to paint them, it is important to understand the process before attempting to do so. Slate shingles are different from traditional clapboard or vinyl siding in that they hang in individual slate pieces around the home. As pieces of slate, they are susceptible to damage if brunt force is exerted on them. Therefore, it is necessary to handle tiles with extreme care when painting them.

Instructions

1. Powerwash the siding using a 1500 PSI powerwasher. Move the powerwasher along the house in small, even strokes and make sure not to leave the nozzle in one place for too long; extended exposure to the force of the machine can damage the shingles. Allow two to three sunny days for the shingles to completely dry.

2. Purchase an exterior latex paint from a local hardware store or paint shop. A regular exterior latex will work on slate siding; no special paints are required for the job.

3. Apply the paint to a small paint roller and use the roller to apply the paint to the shingles. Work slowly, painting one shingle at a time and making sure to apply paint into the small crevices around the tops and bottoms of the shingles.

4. Take extra care to hit every inch of the shingle since the shingles sometimes overlap a bit. Continue until all shingles have been painted. Allow 24 hours for the paint to dry.

5. Repeat the painting process when applying a second coat of paint to the slate shingles. Slate shingles almost always need a second coat to cover the natural properties of the materials beneath it.
