Liven up a laundry room with cheerful colors.
You may not think of your laundry room as a blank canvas for trendy paint colors, but because it's a small room, it's an appropriate space to try out popular or daring colors. Lisa Basinski, faux painter and color specialist in Grand Blanc, Michigan, suggests cheerful colors for laundry rooms or adding a touch of pizazz with metallic paint or decorative plaster.
Metallic Finishes
The Paint Quality Institute's 2011 color trend predictions include the "shimmer and shine" of metallic paints. Not only available in traditional metallic colors such as gold and silver, today's metallic paints also exist in an extensive color palette including glossy terracotta, champagne, sparkling denim blue and shimmering green. An emerging trend is decorative metallic plaster, which can be applied with a brush or roller like paint for a smooth effect, or trowelled on in layers for a more textured look. Metallic finishes create an "upbeat" mood, according to the Paint Quality Institute, which may help reduce wash day blues.
Bold Warm Colors
Washers and dryers, traditionally available only in white, cream or black, are showing up in surprising and bold colors, as pointed out by the House Designers website. This reflects the recent trend toward bold paint colors. Shades of caramel and gold are not too wild, but create a warm, functional feeling in a laundry room and complement most appliance colors.
Green
Green is a restful, calming color and as a "dominant color in nature" works well anywhere in your home, according to the Paint Quality Institute. If your laundry room has little natural light, avoid greens with strong yellow undertones -- incandescent lighting can make it look very bright. Consider a softer sage or pale celery green; both shades complement most other colors in a home.
Lighter Hues
If you're not ready to make a bold statement with your laundry room walls, take heart. Although plain white walls are out of style, pale paint colors remain popular. Very light blue looks fresh and clean with white cupboards and appliances. If you have wood cabinets, a light buttery yellow or whispery beige sets them off nicely, adds more interest to your walls than plain white and adds a bit of warmth and cheer to your laundry room walls.
