Adding a new coat of paint to shutters can do a lot to add to the visual appeal of your home. It's not hard, whether dealing with wooden or vinyl shutters.
Instructions
Painting wooden shutters
1. Remove all shutters, using a screw gun to remove any screws. If the shutter is held on by nails, you can use a flat bar to gently remove the shutter. Removal will make it easier to clean and paint the shutters and will also make window frames and siding more accessible.
2. Wash the shutters, using a hose to remove excessive cobwebs, soil and other materials that may have accumulated.
3. Scrape off any loose old paint, using a scraper.
4. Fill in any cracks or holes with appropriate filler and let it dry.
5. Sand all surfaces smooth, using sandpaper.
6. Scrub away any mold or mildew, using a bleach- and water-based solution or professional-strength cleaner.
7. Give the shutters a final rinse with a hose and let them dry.
8. Apply a coat of primer and allow it to dry.
9. Apply a coat of finish paint and let it dry.
10. Apply a final coat of finish paint and allow it to dry.
11. Place the shutters back on the home exterior.
Vinyl shutters
12. Remove the shutters.
13. Scrub the shutters clean using soap and water, removing all of the residue that has built up.
14. Rinse the shutters using a hose, and allow them to dry.
15. Prime the shutters, using an acrylic-based latex paint.
16. Apply a coat or two of finish paint, using an acrylic-based latex.
