Choosing interior home paint colors doesn't have to be difficult. If you find yourself overwhelmed standing in the paint aisle, remember a few tricks and your decision should be easier. You can take with you a few swatches of color(s) you already have in your home, such as small pillows, throw rug or the antique figurine. Don't be afraid to also take with you images from magazines that show your color scheme and or design. Ask the attendant if they can color match for you and you are ready to choose your home paint color.
Basics of Color
There are three basic color groups for interior paint--soft colors (violet, blue and green), hard colors (red, orange and yellow) and earth tones (beige, brown, taupe and gray). While all these colors are appealing, your best bet in choosing a home paint color is to stick with colors in the same color group. This creates a uniform design for your visitors and yourself.
Soft Colors
Soft colors are used to "soothe" you, typically referred to as cool colors. These colors reflect a calming sense while in that room. Cool colors are best used in bedrooms, reflective office spaces and private getaway rooms.
Hard Colors
Hard colors are referred to as "warm," which translates to energy and playfulness. Reds, oranges and brighter yellows will fill a room with a sense of warmth and fun. These hard/warm colors are best used in kitchens, family rooms and even trendy office spaces. The warmer tones are used to convey a sense of social interaction as well, so being used in the formal dining room is an option as well.
Earth Tone Colors
Earth tone colors are a combination of both options above. This is the safest choice in paint color if you are timid of bright red and want more than pastel lilac. Using a mixture of earth tone colors in a room is a great way to draw attention to your furniture and accent pieces in your room, and can be used in every room of your home. Choosing the right earth tone color in your rooms depends on your accessories and amount of light available in that space.
Perfect Home Paint Option
Sit in your room that you intend to paint. Notice how shadows, light reflection and your furniture fit together. Look especially at floor coverings, using a color out of the base of your floor and including it on your wall will draw the eye up and make all the pieces fit. If your furniture is dark and heavy, consider using an earth tone color to accentuate the beauty of the colors within your furniture. If you are wanting to add excitement to a room using paint color, then the hard colors will do just that. A splash of red can bring excitement to the smallest of walls; yellow in a corner in a kitchen can bring a sunny spot to the darkest of corners.
