Plan Palettes

Paint chips can be beneficial in choosing a color scheme for a room.

Color can make or break the design of a space. The color of a room often creates the first impression when a person steps into a room. The color scheme you select can guide what color you paint the room, what furniture you buy, what artwork you hang up and how you accessorize a space. Because of this, choosing a color scheme for a room can seem like a very daunting task. Once you have chosen the right color, the design may just fall into place.

Instructions

1. Consider the function of the room. Before you can assign the color scheme for your desired space, you must decide what the room is going to be used for. For example, is the room a family room or a living room? Will this room be formal or casual? What will the focal point of the room be: television, fireplace, picture window? Asking these questions will help guide your color selecting decisions.

2. Decide on a decorating scheme for the space. This will help you determine what colors would work best in the room you want to create. For example, if the theme for your room is Tuscan, you will want to rely on warm colors such as reds and golds to fill the space. If the theme for your room is beach cottage, choose a color scheme rich with blues, stone, whites, cream and red.

3. Purchase a color wheel or collect paint color chips from a home decorating store. When choosing the color scheme for your home, you will need to have a visual component to base your decisions on. Simply saying you want a room in blue or green is too vague---sea foam green, periwinkle blue, navy blue, and hunter green are very different colors that will inspire a completely different feel in a space.

4. Take a look at any furniture you already have or artwork you want to place in the room. Color scheme is not always the first step in decorating a space. You may find that a design scheme can be arranged from pieces you already own. You might want to use these pieces to match your room's color scheme. For example, if you have primarily black furniture, you might find your room has a somewhat contemporary or modern feel to it. From this, you can choose colors that contrast sharply with the black.

5. Find inspiration in one piece that you love. If you are having trouble picking the perfect color scheme for your space, pick up your favorite piece of art, a favorite book cover, accessory, candelabra---any piece that will inspire you to choose the colors for your space. Inspiration can be found in very unlikely places, so it might even help to step outside of your house to find colors that you can form your design around.
