What Are Good Exterior Paint Colors for a Raised Ranch With an Arch?
Raised ranch homes feature a distinct exterior design; unlike more traditional colonial style homes, raised ranches typically feature a garden-level basement in which at least half of the lowest level is above the ground. Raised ranch or split-level homes feature many unconventional exterior design elements, including peaked or curved arches above the front doorway. Though such elements add character, they also present challenges when it comes to selecting coherent exterior color schemes.
Earth Tone Colors
Earth tone colors are well suited for raised ranches with an arch because they add subtle elements of color without creating a sense of clutter. Consider a single color for both the top floor and the raised subfloor levels to create a sense of cohesion. A neutral cream or sand color is adaptable to many surround landscapes while a deeper mocha color add richness and depth to a home's exterior. A rustic olive color is an ideal choice for the trim around the home's arch; keep the palette continuous by selecting olive-colored shutters, window and door trim as well. Where possible, preserve any natural wood elements; for example, if your arch is comprised of additional wooden beams or trim to create a pattern within the arch, paint the spaces between the beams olive, but leave the beams natural for a truly earth-inspired palette.
Traditional Colors
Raised ranches gained popularity during the 1970s, and, during that time, a traditional color palette for such homes emerged. If you are more of a traditionalist, consider a palette of saturated colors for your raised ranch and arch front. If you want to keep the colors adaptable, a simple cream, off-white or crisp white for the main exterior color offers a clean slate for adding accent colors. If your raised subfloor is lined with brick, choose a rust or brick red as an accent color for the trim along the arch. Matching red shutters complete the cohesive palette. Royal blue and evergreen are also traditional color options; consider an archway with dark colored trim and a lighter shade of the same color as a filler inside the arch.
Neutral Colors
Raised ranches offer significant exterior features: a multi-level exterior, several windows and an arch contribute to a busy visual exterior. Avoid adding additional color clutter to the home's exterior by sticking with playful neutrals. Cool colors like slate gray are modern and subtle options for a main exterior color; pair a cool gray with a warmer option for the trim around the arch, such as a pale rose red or a more modern pale orange. For a brighter color option, paint the majority of the exterior in a warm beige with red undertones; a pale sunny yellow brightens up the trim around the archway and is subtle enough to also fill in the area within the arch.
