Suggestions For Moroccan Interior Decorating

Morocco is a country located in Northwest Africa, with coastlines along both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Though much of Morocco is desert lands, it also enjoys lush countryside, cooled by the sea winds. Influenced by both African design and European Mediterranean design, Moroccan décor exhibits rich colors, graphic motifs and the blending of outdoor elements with interior rooms.

Color

Brilliant jewel tones define Moroccan design. Ruby reds, cobalt blues, golden yellows and emerald greens abound in the embroidered fabrics and paint colors. Monochromatic color schemes, in which only one color is used, are unheard of in Moroccan décor.

Mix the bright colors together; choose two or three different fabrics with well-defined graphic patterns. Use these generously, in window treatments, couch and floor pillows, and wall hangings. Upholster your furniture in solid colors to break up the cacophony of color, but choose an equally bright color found in your fabric choices.

Pattern

Though you'll have plenty of patterns in your fabrics, Moroccan décor includes intricate details in the cabinetry and accessories. Cabinetry and tables often include complex inlays and stenciling, depicting geometric symbolism. Silver bowls are incised with delicate patterns and may include equally elaborate footings or stands.

The abundance of detail can be lost. To avoid this, place these ornate pieces so they are well spaced. A painted or intricately carved armoire should not be set next to a coffee table of equally elaborate detail. Avoid grouping in your accessories. Rather, allow that silver bowl to stand on its own on a corner tabletop.

Details

No Moroccan interior is complete without an exhibition of highly stylized tiles. This can be a few tiles placed within a tabletop or an entire floor or wall covered in tiles.

Potted plants are equally important in Moroccan design. These can be grouped together to fill a corner, as well as one or two large plants to flank the entryway.

The hardware on cabinetry and doors is ornate and as much a part of the design as the carvings and color. Use large hinges, decorative knobs and handles.

Hanging lamps are often used in Moroccan décor. In lieu of these, include lamps with ironwork bases and beaded shades in your room. Keep the lighting subdued, however, as the brilliance of the colors and patterns are best shown in muted lighting.
