A sunset with shadows will be easier to paint than one with lots of details.
Painting a sunset mural can be a nice way to decorate or create an interesting conversation piece in a room. Depending on the degree of details you plan to include it can be quite complex to create or quite simple. The most complicated part of mural painting is finding and mixing the right colors and knowing what you are going to paint. Once you have the mural drawn on the wall it is very easy to paint, almost like a paint by numbers project.
Instructions
1. Acquire a reference image of the sunset you want to paint. A sunset with New Mexico's wide open skies will look different than a tropical one.
2. Measure your walls by height and length.
3. Scan or open your image into a photo-editing program. Make your image as many inches wide and tall as your wall is long and high in feet and apply a grid to it, then print the grid version of the image. You can also use a photocopy machine to create an appropriately sized image and then draw a grid on it using a ruler.
4. Divide your wall into a grid that matches your picture, with a measuring tape. Use a light pencil to draw the grid on the wall.
5. Transfer the image in the photo to the wall using the grids. Draw the image in each photo grid onto the corresponding wall slot. This will ensure your image is transferred accurately.
6. Erase the grid lines from the wall once you have completely finished transferring the photo image.
7. Acquire paints that match the colors in your photo. You may need to have them specially mixed or if you have painting skill you can mix some shades on your own. Remember there is always some variation in shade in real life so purchase some white and black paint to mix with your colors to create lighter or darker shades as necessary.
8. Use artists paint brushes for the mural. Regular wall painting brushes will be too big and may ruin the painting.
9. Print out a large copy of your image without the grid and use it to see what color goes where. For an easier approach paint by the color, wait for it to dry then add detail work, like shadows, in darker shades of the same colors before moving on to the next color. This way you will not waste paints or have some dry out or smudge before you are ready.
