Fresh paint A Finished Basement

Paint a Finished Basement

Once you finish your basement walls and ceilings with drywall, painting it is relatively easy and much like painting any finished walls. To make the process safe and make your basement look bright, you need to take a few safety precautions, and choose paint colors that brighten the basement rooms.

Instructions

1. Prepare the floor to protect it while you paint the walls and ceiling. Cover the floor with old sheets or newspapers in several layers so the paint does not bleed through to the floor covering.

2. Open any high wall windows in the basement for ventilation. Sit several box fans in the basement to draw the vapors out of the space.

3. Cover the corners of light switches and electrical sockets with painters tape. Apply painters tape to corners between walls, between the walls and the ceiling, and around any other bordering items.

4. Fill a paint tray half-full of your chosen paint color. Lighter and bright colors make the basement seem bigger and more open than darker colors. Wear your ventilation mask to protect yourself from the paint fumes.

5. Cover paint rollers in paint and paint the ceiling first. Painting the ceiling first prevents paint from splattering off the ceiling onto already painted walls. Allow the ceiling to dry overnight before painting the edges of the ceiling. After the edges are painted, again dry overnight before continuing to the walls. For drywall textured ceilings, this step is not necessary.

6. Paint the walls of the finished basement, working carefully around receptacle covers, light switches and interior trim pieces. Allow the walls to dry overnight before removing the strips of painters tape.
