Remodeling is often an intimidating and expensive prospect that is easily put off because homeowners fear the time or monetary commitment. In reality, simply adding a fresh coat of paint or change of color is one of the most economical remodeling projects you can do and can quickly transform a room's appeal and ambiance. Calculating the area of a room you want to paint is the first step, and the procedure requires little more than some rudimentary measurements and some basic math.
Instructions
1. Measure the ceiling height of the room. Label this measurement as dimension "H."
2. Measure the overall length of the room. Record this measurement as dimension "L."
3. Measure the overall width of the room. Note this measurement as dimension "W."
4. Calculate the total linear wall length of the room. Add dimension L and dimension W together, then multiply the sum of the two dimensions by 2 to determine the overall linear length of the walls. Example: For a room with a length of 18 feet ("L") and a width of 14 feet ("W"), add 18 and 14 for a sum of 32, then multiply 32 by 2 for a total linear wall length of 64 feet.
5. Determine the total wall area. Multiply the total linear wall length determined in Step 4 by dimension H to calculate the overall wall area in square feet. Example: From Step 4, for a ceiling height of 8 feet ("H") and the total linear room length of 64 feet, multiply 64 by 8 for a total wall area of 512 square feet.
6. Calculate the ceiling's surface area by multiplying dimension L by dimension W to define the ceiling area in square feet. Example: Continuing with our sample room, 18 feet ("L") times 14 feet ("W") equals 252 square feet of ceiling area.
7. Add the totals calculated in Steps 5 and 6 to determine the room's surface area for painting. Example: Completing the sample room, 512 square feet of total wall area plus 252 square feet of ceiling area equals 764 square feet to be painted.
