Choose A Fresh paint Color Plan For Any Room

A color scheme is a personal choice.

Picking the right color for your room is a personal decision. Color is subjective in the way it impacts us, and everyone has their own ideas about what colors are attractive and in what combinations. The best way to get the right color is to take your time making your decision, before you put in the time, effort and expense of the paint job.

Instructions

1. Look around the room and see what is already there, the furniture or items you'll be keeping. Note these colors and keep them in mind for your selection of a base color.

2. Visit the paint store and pick up some swatches that appeal to you. Many paint lines also have preselected color combinations that may work for you. These special palettes can provide a simple solution if you find an attractive choice. Keep in mind the existing colors in the room. If they are strong colors, like lemon or forest green, you may want to tend to neutral colors for a base color. For more impact, you can go with a stronger colors, or at least use them as accents throughout the room.

3. Sift through your swatches at home and review them in the room, under different lighting conditions. Be careful with the most intense colors, which can have a bigger impact than you might guess.

4. Pick a base color, which will be the color you will use on the walls. White and light neutrals, like cream or beige, provide an easy base from which to match more colorful choices for trim. If you want to go with a bit more pizazz for the base color you can, but that will cut down trim color choices. You can also choose to paint one wall a deeper, richer color as an accent wall.

5. Select a color for the trim and other elements that goes with the base color. If you went with a light or light neutral for the base, you can do almost anything, although if it is a warm shade like taupe, warmer shades like burgundy or russet are easier to match. For a cooler base, like a soft dove gray, cool shades like teal will match well. For a brighter base (like royal blue), a complement (orange in this example) will make a strong statement, but may be too much for some tastes. Toning things down with an easygoing earth tone may be more in order.

6. Pick a lighter color for the ceiling if the walls are dark. If bright white is too strong, use a pastel version of the walls. In any case, do not paint the ceiling darker than the walls.
