Fresh paint With Vibrant Colors

Bright colored paint
can accentuate other decor elements.

The Paint Quality Institute's color trend predictions over the last several years have included bright paint colors, including lime green, citrus yellow, orange and apple red. As more people choose jewel tones to provide a pop of color in their homes, paint jobs have become a little more challenging. You can't always paint one or two coats of a bright colored paint and expect perfection. You might need specialized primers, and creating straight lines and flawless finishes are more difficult.

Instructions

1. Read the color description on the paint swatch. If it's marked "low hide" or has to be mixed in an ultra-deep or neutral base, chances are it will take multiple coats to hide, and you'll need a high-hiding primer.

2. Ask paint store staff what type of primer you will need to the paint. While gray primer is often sold as a base coat for bright colors, some paint companies have colored primers. For instance, you may be able to purchase a red primer for bright red paint, or a blue one for blue paint.

3. Buy enough paint for the entire project. If you calculate that 1 gallon of paint will be enough to do one coat on your walls but you need to do three coats of a bright color, purchase 3 gallons.

4. Mix all the paint together in a 5-gallon bucket before you start painting. This ensures uniformity of color.

5. "Cut in" the edges with a brush before rolling the walls. You are more likely to see visible brush marks with bright colors and you'll reduce their appearance by brushing before rolling.

6. Allow a little extra time for drying between coats of paint. Bright paint often has more colorant added, which can retard drying time. For instance, if the recommended drying time on the label is 4 hours, allow 5 hours.

7. Use blue painters tape to mask off ceilings, trim and adjacent walls before starting. Unless you have a lot of experience and a very steady hand, taping is the only way you'll get straight, clean lines. Small imperfections will be accentuated by bright colored paint.
