African savannas
have a variety of plants and animals that have adapted to the ecosystem.
African savannas are biomes that are rolling grasslands with small amounts of trees and bushes. Savannas are near the equator on the edges of tropical rainforests and feature a variety of animals, including lions and zebras. Creating an African savanna in your home or classroom is a simple project that requires a few hours of preparation and decoration. Create a savanna for an African-themed party, a classroom decoration or a theater production of a savanna-themed play.
Instructions
1. Lay down a plastic tarp in the room where you are creating your savanna. Place hay and fake grass on the tarp to simulate the ground of a savanna. Tape some of the hay and fake grass to the base of the walls for a more authentic look.
2. Scatter fake bushes, as well as real plants, throughout the house to create the randomly occurring bushes and trees that grow in the savanna. Include at least one or two in each room to give it a wilder feel.
3. Print out a picture of a savanna to use as a reference for painting backdrops. Lay your bedsheets down flat on the ground. Paint the sheets to look like a savanna, including animals and plants. Create a continuous savanna landscape on multiple sheets. Let the paint dry for several hours.
4. Stand on your step ladder, holding the top corner of your sheet in your hand. Get another person on the other side of the room, standing on a step ladder with the other top corner in his hand. Tack the sheet to the wall at the top and bottom corners.
5. Tack sheets on all the walls of the area you are decorating. Cut holes in the sheets for windows, doors or walkways.
6. Purchase a few model savanna animals and place them around the house. Buy several species, such as zebras and lions, and have them interact.
7. Add other details to your savanna, such as a blue construction paper to simulate a pool of water and place some animals near it. Play the CD of animal sounds on a loop to create a savanna atmosphere.
