Wall paint color choices make a calm or lively space.
According to San Francisco Bay Area designer Shannon Kaye, wall paint color totally changes a space. When picking a wall paint, you first need to find out if you need a primer or base coat, or if the walls are already primed for new paint. Once you have a primer on the walls, you can choose paints based on the color. You can also choose a quick-drying paint. However, the most important consideration is color -- whether you want a simple beige or a flashy green or orange.
Instructions
1. List the colors already existing in the room you plan to paint. Note the colors of furniture, lamps, tables and desks. If you have bookshelves full of books, for example, note the prominent colors in the book spines.
2. Choose whether you want to complement or contrast the colors in the room. For example, if you have a blue rug or carpet you want to keep in the room, consider either a blue-ish wall color, like periwinkle, to complement the rug or a contrasting color, like red, to make the rug pop. Or list an accent color like white or beige that will lightly bring focus to the rug and not the walls.
3. Take snapshots of the room or rooms you wish to paint. Process or print the photos. Bring the photos with you when you visit a paint store.
4. Visit a paint store for sample colors. Bring the list of colors you created and the snapshots of the room. Pull a few color samples from the paint section. Consider which one you will want to look at each day and which will bring attention to certain objects or areas in the room. For instance, a light gray color or a milky chocolate brown complements a living room with a dark cherry wood or mahogany. Gold and apricot colors go with just about anything.
5. Stick to your character. According to San Francisco Bay Area designer Shannon Kaye, when choosing paint colors, pay attention to your personality. Select colors that you feel comfortable living with every day in your home. Avoid flashy or trendy colors, like purples and cranberry reds, if you feel you only like the color because it's "in" or will go with a certain piece of furniture.
