Suggestions For Painting Rooms Different Colors

Choosing the right wall colors can be confusing.

Many people consider the old-fashioned way of painting the walls in the entire house with an off-white or neutral shade to be boring. Entryways, which can be viewed from a main living area such as a kitchen, the dining room or bedrooms, need to have a coordinating paint color in order for the design to flow comfortably throughout the house. This will give it balance and unity, whereas noncoordinating colors will not.

Monochromatic Look

Using slightly darker or lighter shades in different rooms will help the design flow throughout your home and make it more visually appealing. For instance, if your living room area has upholstered furniture that goes well with sage green, then you might want to choose a lighter green shade for an adjoining dining room, study or kitchen area. Small areas such as bathrooms or hallways will appear intimate and larger with darker shades of green.

Color Family

If you do not want to use an overall color scheme with just one color throughout your home, it is important to choose shades in the same color family. For instance, blue is a cool color, so adjoining rooms will look beautiful in other cool colors, such as white, lemon yellow or a raspberry pink. Taupe walls in areas with accessories in warm shades of coral or green need to continue the theme of warm colors within your home. Split-level homes or those with different floors do not have to follow this rule; each floor or separate section can be warm or cool, as long as they are not visible from the same floor space.

Room Size

Consider the size of each room before choosing your paint colors. Typically, lighter colors make the room seem smaller, and darker colors draw the eye in and make things seem larger. Accenting wall niches, crown molding or chair rails in coordinating colors will also create visual flow within your home.
