Paint Wallpaper in a Mobile Home
Dated wallpaper can dull down an entire room and your mood. Often the task of stripping the wallpaper feels more daunting than just leaving it up, especially if you live in a mobile home and the wallpaper is actually part of the wall. However, being afraid to paint over that old wallpaper in your mobile home is no excuse to avoid doing it. A little preparation and a minimal investment in painting supplies can be an easy way to modernize and brighten any space.
Instructions
Clean the wallpaper
1. Dust the wallpaper with a rag and/or remove dirt and debris with a vacuum. You want paint to adhere to the wallpaper, not the cobwebs.
2. Clean the surface with any common household cleaner to promote adhesion. Let the surface dry completely to avoid trapping any excess moisture when priming and painting.
3. Glue any loose wallpaper with wallpaper glue and/or seam adhesive. Fill any holes in the wall with spackling, sanding the spackling (if the brand requires it) to create an even surface.
4. Sand the surface lightly if your wallpaper is vinyl. Vinyl wallpaper has a protective coat of vinyl, making it slick to the touch and more stain resistant. Vinyl wallpaper is commonly found in mobile or manufactured homes.
Choose a primer
5. Purchase a primer specifically suited to your type of wallpaper. Latex primers are often preferred for their quick drying time and easy cleanup. Whichever type of primer you choose, let it dry thoroughly to prevent trapping excess moisture between the wall and coats of primer and paint.
6. Purchase a primer which is also a stain-blocking primer to assist in covering patterns in the wallpaper, preventing them from bleeding through the top coat of paint.
7. Tint the primer so that it's a lighter version of the actual top coat of paint, reducing the amount of actual paint required.
Apply primer and paint
8. Apply the primer with a roller or brush, referring to the label's recommendation on drying time between coats. Typically this is one to four hours. Busy or bold wallpapers may require more than one coat of primer to "seal out" the stain of the pattern.
9. Purchase a latex paint as your top coat but keep in mind that the higher the gloss, the more imperfections are likely to be noticeable. Typically, paints with a flat, eggshell or satin sheen will tone done brush marks and surface imperfections as well as provide better adhesion.
10. Apply the paint with a brush or roller only after the primer has thoroughly dried. Achieving a uniform appearance may require a second coat depending on the color and surface. Typically, it's recommended you wait four hours before recoating latex paint and a month before using any household cleaners on the surface.
