Fresh paint Tiles On The Cement Floor

Use a yardstick to draw your tile edges and patterns directly on the concrete floor.

Perhaps you'd like to retile your floor but don't have the funds or expertise to install it yourself, or maybe you installed concrete floors for a thrifty, eco-friendly design. If you opt not to embrace the concrete in its bare or stained form, you can paint faux tiles on it, which can appear very realistic, depending on your painting techniques. Use floor paint intended for concrete, like garage floor paint.

Instructions

1. Go to a local tile retailer and look for pattern and design inspirations. Look for a style you can replicate with paint. Less complex patterns mean less painting, but if you're up for a challenge, patterns with three or more colors work just as well as simpler designs.

2. Prepare the concrete surface for painting. Vacuum or sweep thoroughly and mop to remove dust, dirt and any food or stains.

3. Tape down the baseboards with painter's tape. Make sure to apply it in a straight line, right at the bottom edge of the baseboards so the floor paint covers 100 percent of its area.

4. Paint a base color on your floor. This will be a neutral, highlight or midtone color, depending on the tile design you'd like. Start with a medium-sized paintbrush and paint the edges of the floor. This way, you don't risk getting paint on the walls or baseboards with a large roller. Paint the rest with a roller. Allow the floor to dry.

5. Trace your tile pattern on the floor with a pencil and yardstick or other straight edge. Start by tracing only the design for the color you're about to paint. This minimizes confusion and painting the wrong areas if you're painting with more than one accent color.

6. Repeat the taping and painting process for each pattern layer. Always let paint dry thoroughly before overlapping it with another layer.
