Information For Calculating Painting Jobs

Information for Estimating Painting Jobs

Applying paint to walls is easy, but accurately estimating the job can be complicated. To set a fair price, it is critical to obtain all of the information the customer needs.

Size

Calculate the square footage of each wall, multiplying length by height. Add the measurements together for the total square footage. Calculate ceiling square footage by multiplying length by width. Measure the length of all trim.

Coats

Most paint jobs require at least one coat of primer and two coats of paint; bright colors, particularly reds, often require at least three coats. Include the proper number of coats in your estimate.

Surface Condition

Assess the existing paint. Is it flaking or peeling? Is it dirty or mildewed? Include the cost of pressure washing, sanding or scraping.

Additional Tasks

Does the homeowner want additional repairs done? Small jobs add up in both time and expense, so roll them into your bid. Consider a bulk discount for multiple jobs, but don't cut your entire profit.

Compounding Factors

Many painters add a 10 percent "difficulty fee" for working around children or furniture or coping with an unusual location. Study the homeowner and circumstances surrounding the job, and price the work accordingly.
