Pearl paint
is often used on cars.
Pearl paint is infused with mica, a semi-transparent mineral that's known for its ability to absorb and reflect light. Similar to metallic paint, pearl paint gives a dimension to painted surfaces that's softer than metallic paint. Pearl paint is often called candy paint, in part due to the frequency of pastel pearl paint finishes. Pearl powder is a powder that is widely available and can be used to turn any type of paint into pearl paint.
Walls
Pearl paint can be used to create a depth to a traditional paint color. There are two ways to accomplish a pearl paint finish on the walls of a home. Paint the walls with the desired paint color. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Apply at least one coat of clear pearl paint to the room. Note that it may take two coats of clear pearl paint to provide a consistent luster to the walls. The second option is to stir pearl powder into the base coat of paint. Mix it thoroughly and mix it often to keep the pearl shine the same throughout the container of paint.
Furniture
Pearl paint turns basic pieces of furniture such as dressers or side tables into more contemporary pieces. Sand the surface of the piece to be painted with fine grit sandpaper. This not only prepares the surface of the piece to accept the new paint, it also removes any dirt or debris that can cause the paint to bubble. Wipe the piece down thoroughly with a tac cloth to clean it. Paint with the preferred color of pearl paint and allow to dry.
Cabinets
Paint out old or outdated kitchen and bathroom cabinets with pearl paint to create an instant update in the room. Remove hardware such as knobs and handles. Take the doors off of the cabinets and remove any drawers. Sand the surface with fine grit sandpaper and wipe the surface clean with a tac cloth. Paint with the pearl paint color of choice. For interest, paint the cabinets one color and the doors another or paint lower cabinets in a darker color and the upper cabinets in a lighter color of pearl paint.
Accents
Pearl paint can bring attention to accent pieces in home decor. Paint candle sticks with pearl paint to make them a feature. Call attention to frames on mirrors or art work and they become main attractions. Paint chair rail moldings in a pearl paint that's a shade lighter or darker than the wall paint. Paint panel moldings in a pearl paint color that either matches or coordinates with the artwork that will hang inside the panel molding to make the artwork appear larger and more substantial in the room.
