Bathtubs require sanding prior to application of a finish.
A new finish can transform a tarnished or mismatched bathtub into something beautiful. Improper refinishing techniques can lead to heavy shedding and peeling. The right preparation and application strategies help to promote an attractive finish that will remain durable over time.
Abrasion
Improper preparation will ultimately lead to paint failure in the form of peeling and chipping. Bathtubs are ill-suited for adhesion, and require sanding prior to application of a finish. You should scour the tub with 120 grit sandpaper to promote a tacky surface that will help the primer and paint stay in place.
Priming
Paint won't adhere well to a bare bathtub even if it is properly abraded. An acrylic latex primer is appropriate for conditioning a tub to accept paint. Once you've covered areas adjacent to the bathtub with masking paper and painter's tape, you should apply a coat of acrylic latex spray primer, holding the can about 8 inches from the bathtub as you spray.
Painting
Ordinary acrylic latex and oil-based paints are not appropriate for bathtubs, and will eventually chip. An appliance epoxy paint is best suited for tubs, because it dries to an attractive, glossy sheen, and provides excellent durability in the face of duress. Once the primer has dried for at least three hours, you can apply the epoxy spray paint just as you did the primer base coat.
Considerations
Appliance epoxy paint needs about 6 to 8 hours to fully dry and cure. Running the tub too soon may lead to paint failure.
